Congratulations to our primary HRIS swimmers who came fourth overall last Friday at Maitland pool. We are looking forward to holding our Primary Carnival on Friday and hope for improved weather.

The Prefects began a roster this week to provide lunch time activities to our younger Hill Campus students and have introduced games on the James Fletcher Oval and the ever popular Kahoot in the Library. Student leadership is an important part of our school. Each week the School Captains, Vice Captains and Senior Prefects meet with Mr Parsons and myself. These prefects bring feedback or questions from the student body to the meeting as well as organising key School activities and events. In this way, Mr Parsons and I hope to ensure ‘student voice’ is being heard. On Park Campus, the red post box remains one of the most popular forms of communication between Mrs Dyer and K-4 students – there are many questions and comments placed in the box every day!

The Parent Forum on 9 March is open to all parents. The meeting will take place in the Horbury Hunt Hall on Hill Campus at 6.00pm. The meeting focus is on the NGS Framework and a Q and A session. The framework identifies our key learning, teaching and wellbeing goals for our students. Mr Parsons, Mrs Dyer, Mrs Peterson and I will be present.  Please enter via the Church Street Gates. At the end of the meeting we will be looking for parent volunteers who would like to be involved in helping this year with the Nexus Art Exhibition as well as parent volunteers to join a current fundraising group for the Vietnam project. In addition, the School will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2018 and I invite parents to consider whether they would like to be part a centenary committee to assist with this. If you are attending the meeting, please email Kate Grogan (kate.grogan@ngs.nsw.edu.au)

Congratulations to the following students:

Lorcan Redmond (Year 11) who won the Senior NSW All Schools Triathlon for the fourth consecutive year.

Ryan Box (Year 10) who came 10th in the Intermediate event

Hamish Bell, Joel Owers and Henry Knights (Year 9) who finished 60th in the Teams event

Tatum Gilmour (Year 6) who won the 11 Years HRIS Individual medal

William Jeffery (Year 5) who won the 11 Years HRIS Individual medal

Our 11 Years Boys (William Jeffery, Edward Bell Kalen Routley and Luke Talley) who won the team award for the best school at HRIS in their division.

Our 11 Year Girls (Tatum Gilmour and Alice Jeffery) who won the team award for the best school at HRIS in their division.

As the school year falls into its regular routine, we certainly understand the difficulty and frustration in finding a suitable spot to park your car and walk your child into the grounds of Park Campus.

We must, however, reiterate the importance of finding a suitable parking spot, and remind you that the private parking for residents in Corlette St is simply not an option.

Please be assured that we are in the process of designing a new and more effective way to operate both morning drop off and afternoon pick up arrangements.

Last Wednesday, Alicia from Newcastle City Council came to talk to us about recycling – both at home and at Pre-school. The children learned that ‘recycling’ means using old materials to make new things – for example, using old magazines to make new paper. We learnt how most of our rubbish is dumped in huge holes in the ground called landfill; how this rubbish slowly begins to rot and produces nasty gases and poisonous liquids; and how landfill sites are dirty and spoil the environment.

Alicia explained how we would not need so many landfill sites if we threw less rubbish away and one of the ways to do this is to recycle. Interestingly, the children already knew quite a bit about recycling. They were able to tell Alicia about the composting that we do at pre-school as part of our Sustainability policy. They were also able to tell her about all the boxes and other recycled materials we use for our construction and collage activities. We also told Alicia about the (yellow top) recycling bins we have in each room which we place our used paper in and which are collected and emptied by Year 4 students each week. Alicia had some very positive things to say about all our recycling efforts and encouraged the children to keep up the good work.

Triathlon – State Champion

Last week, the NSW All Schools’ Triathlon Championships were held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith. NGS had 5 students competing in events at this Championship, two individuals and one relay team.

A huge congratulations to Lorcan Redmond (Year 11) who won the Senior Individual State Championship. This is due reward for a student who has dedicated so much of his time to achieve as much as he can in this, just one of the two sports in which he is NSW and Australian Champion. Cross Country being his other sport. Lorcan was recognized recently at the very prestigious NSWCIS Annual Awards night in Sydney with a State Medallion for his National Cross Country win in 2016

Ryan Box (Year 10) finished in 10th place out of 185 competitors in the Intermediate Individual division.

In the Intermediate Relay event Hamish Bell (swim leg), Joel Owers (cycle leg) and Henry Knights (run leg), all in Year 9 finished in 60th place out of a massive 280 teams-a rally great effort.

NSW Country Swimming Championships

Congratulations to Tatum Gilmour (Year 6) who competed at the NSW Country Swimming Championships at Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre on the weekend.

Tatum competed in 4 events and finished 3rd in the 10 years Girls 100m Freestyle Final in a time of 1.11.27

A fabulous effort!

Interschools Snowsports 2017 – Information Session

The response to participation in the 2017 Interschools Snowsports competition has been great and organisation is well underway for this upcoming event.

An information session for all parents who have expressed information in their children participating in this event will be held in the Sandi Warren Performance Centre, Park Campus, this Thursday, 2nd March, commencing at 10.00am.

Secondary School Swimming Carnival Results

The Secondary School Swimming Championships were held earlier last week, on Monday, 20 February, at Lambton Pool.

On what was a great day, weather-wise after the temperatures we have had, it was good to once again see so many students participating in so many events throughout the day.

It was disappointing to not be able to finish all events; however, the participation rates prevented this occurring. We are looking to revise the situation in 2018.

Special mention, as always at Swimming carnivals, must be made of the contribution made by our Senior students who led by example throughout the day.

Of particular note was the number of students who gave up their afternoons to swim the pre-carnival events-we had 122 students for the 200m F/S and over 109 for the 200m Individual Medley events turn up on a Wednesday afternoon to do those events and this is real credit to those students and the incredible House spirit they show.

The results of the day can be found >here.

An NGS team to contest the 2017 HRIS Championships to be held on Thursday, 16 March has now been selected. Please >click here to access the team list.

All team members will receive an information sheet regarding that meet, closer to the date.
