Both respect for tradition and our modern vibrant school were on show last Friday at the Founders’ Day events. I hope the many visitors to the School enjoyed their experience as the school community celebrated 98 years. >Click here to see some pictures of the day.

It is Year 10’s turn to shine this week. The Wiz will be performing at the Sandi Warren Performance Centre on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights this week. I congratulate Year 10 on the way they have worked together in creating all aspects of this performance. It is a significant achievement – working together to put on such an event.  K-2 and Year 3-6 are getting an experience of this for the first time as they prepare for their musicals later this term. We wish Year 10 well this week and look forward to seeing what they have been able to produce.

Many of our students are representing us at the HRIS Cultural Festival on Wednesday evening. Thank you to over 80 students who attended the HRIS Secondary Athletics Championships yesterday. NGS finished 3rd overall.

Year 12 are in a particularly busy period of their final year of school. We look forward to seeing Year 12 parents at their final Information Evening this Wednesday as we discuss Trial Examination and HSC procedures as well as support structures for Year 12 over the coming months.

You may have seen the news last week in regards to HSC reform. There are several significant changes and parents who are interested can see these in a short film.

Schools are welcoming these changes, the first significant reforms since 2001.

Congratulations to the following students on their recent sporting achievements:

  • Susanna Behne-Smith (Year 8) selected to attend the U17 Australian soccer Matildas’ camp
  • Ryan Box (Year 9) 10th in the NSW All Schools’ Cross Country Championships
  • Lorcan Redmond (Year 10) 1st in the NSW All Schools’ Cross Country Championships and 16 years NSW State Champion
  • Caleb Agostino-Morrow (Year 11) 12th in the NSW All Schools’ Cross Country Championships
  • Kieran Fallon (Year 11) selected for the AICES 16 years Rugby team
  • Year 8 students Isaac Duncan-Daley; Thomas Elkovich and Michael Papadopoulos selected into the NSW Futsal team.

Royal Commission

The Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse in relation to the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle begins in Newcastle on 2 August. Bishop Gregory Thompson circulated the attached letter >Click here, to parishes over the weekend. You will no doubt be aware of the media this has attracted and will continue to attract over the coming weeks. I congratulate Bishop Greg and those members of the diocese who have spoken out about the past in the hope of shaping a better future.

At this stage, I want to assure all parents that we have very strict guidelines for the employment of staff who must possess a current working with children check. Staff participate in professional learning on a regular basis and must adhere to strict professional standards.

Grandparents and Grandfriends Day at Park Campus

We were blessed with a glorious sunny day to match the bright faces at Park Campus last Friday. The pride and delight was evident as students shared part of their school day with their Grandparents and Grandfriends. We are especially grateful to our special visitors who took the time to visit classrooms and experience an entertaining concert in the Sandi Warren Performance Centre. The playground was transformed into a sea of picnicking families and friends during the shared morning tea.

These days form long lasting memories for families and remind us of the importance of strengthening the connections between the generations.

From the Director of Pre-school image

The transition from holidays back into the Pre-school routine has gone smoothly with the children looking refreshed and like they have grown a few centimetres over the three week break. They all seem really happy to be back and there has been a lot of chatting and socialising.

This term is shaping up to be a big one with the staff continuing to carry out developmental checklists on each child so that families will receive a Pre-school report towards the end of this term. Staff will also be documenting learning stories and anecdotal records for the children with portfolios on display in the rooms for parents to look at. These will be available to take home at the end of the year.

Some grandparents enjoyed looking at the portfolios on Founders’/Grandparents Day – our first ‘special day’ of Term 3 which was held in conjunction with the rest of the school on Friday, 22 July.

As part of the celebrations, we had an open day and invited grandparents and/or parents to come and visit Pre-school throughout the day and participate in activities with their respective grandchild /child.

For those families who have siblings attending the school, many grandparents co-ordinated their time so that they could visit Pre-school and attend the celebrations in the School. It was lovely to have so many family members visiting and the children loved introducing their friends, showing grandparents their ‘hard work’ and having grandparents watch them play, paint, build, dance and listen to stories.

We have lots more special events to look forward to this term. The Marie Walton Mahon Dance Academy are coming and Mimi from Kids Get Active will also return to implement some yoga sessions with the children. We are most definitely strapped in and ready to go!

Please note that the Pre-school photos will now take place in Week 6 (Tuesday, 23 August and Thursday, 25 August) rather than in Week 3 as written on the Term 3 Calendar.

Representative Honours

A huge congratulations to Susanna Behne-Smith who continues to achieve great things in Football. After recently being selected in the Northern NSW State side, Susanna represented that team at the Australian Under 17 Championships. Following that huge competition, Susanna was one of 26 girls selected to attend the U17 Junior (Australian) Matilda’s Squad camp in Canberra over the last few days. From that camp 17 girls will be selected to in the Australian U17 squad to play a number of games in Vietnam. We wish Susanna every success at that camp!

Cross Country

Last Friday, three NGS secondary students contested the NSW All Schools’ (Secondary) Cross Country Championships which was held at Eastern Creek. They were members of the NSWCIS team, after already working their way up the representative ladder through HRIS and AICES competitions. The All School’s Cross Country comprises all three NSW education sectors and also doubles as the CHS (Combined High Schools) Championship comprising teams from their many individual regions, and with CIS (Combined Independent Schools) and CCC (Combined Catholic Colleges) also entering large teams. At a state event with all three sectors involved ensured fields of over 60 in each race.

All three NGS students are to be congratulated on their really outstanding results against the best runners from across NSW.

Snow Sports

During the recent holidays, three of our students competed for NGS in the 2016 Interschools Northern NSW Snowsports Snowboard competition.

Our team of Taj Curren, Otto Dries and Lachlan Dunning (pictured below) finished with a Bronze medal in the Giant Slalom with Taj also awarded 3rd place in the Snowboard cross.

This was an outstanding achievement by these boys and we hope to build upon the success of this team in 2017 with, hopefully, many more competitors representing the School.
